What is Direct Seeing? Who Sees? What is being Seen?

Question:

What is direct Seeing? Who Sees? What is being seen? Please help explain it clearly.

Answer:

Let’s begin with what direct seeing is not.

Direct Seeing is not seeing through the eyes:

The eyes do not see. It is the Witness Consciousness that has projected a desire and sees its desire in name and form [Naama-Rupa]. This sight of the truth by the Witness is called Insight. E.g., it is not true that the earnest spiritualist is reading these words. The reality is that the perception of sight of these words arises, peaks, and dissolves into the backdrop of the NOW. Then, the next sentence arises, peaks, and disappears into the backdrop of the NOW. The perception of sight is a transient wave. It is not permanent and continuous. Permanency and Continuity are mere beliefs. This belief is appropriated by the Witness pretending to be the ‘I’ that is seeing through the eyes. Direct Seeing cannot happen through the eyes.

Direct seeing is not seeing through thought:

Once a belief is formed, a story created by linking thoughts together is seized. A story cannot be Reality because Reality entails only one arising in any given instance, whereas the story is a memory sewn together by linking arisings. This story is nothing but a memory thought. Direct Seeing is not seeing through the memory thought. Direct Seeing is seeing from the vantage point beyond the memory thought. E.g., if you see this wisdom from prior conditioning of thought, you begin comparing it to what you have read or heard before. But if you simply see without the interference of thought or past conditioning, then it is the Witness seeing the Reality.

Direct seeing is not seeing by the ‘Person’.

The Witness sees. The person is the seen. The person is not the seer. The person is a concept created by putting two arisings together – the body arising plus the mind arising. What the Witness sees is the body-arising and the mind-arising. The Witness does not see the person because when the body-arising is, the mind-arising is not, and vice versa. The concept of Personhood does not exist in Reality, but only in Memory.

    • The body-arising appears and disappears as a gross sensation. This is instantly wiped away by the NOW.
    • The mind-arising appears and disappears as a subtle sensation. This is instantly wiped away by the NOW.

The pretentious Witness sews the memory of the two arisings together. The belief ‘I am the body’ and ‘I am the mind’ are thus born from this sewing-together impulse. The belief is a subtle and unconscious arising that, in turn, propels belief in a continuous and permanent person. Direct Seeing cannot happen through a belief; hence, direct seeing is not seeing by the person.

Then what is Direct Seeing?

Once this is clear, it becomes evident that Direct Seeing is simply seeing a random arising on the backdrop of the NOW. There is only one arising in any given instance, either a perception of sight, sound, smell, taste, touch or thought, feeling, or sensation. These are the only 8 possible arisings that never ever occur together because the wiper of the NOW wipes them away instantly. No backstory, no frontstory, no story at all! Nothing permanent there, no continuous person there, no question of deriving happiness or sadness from it, no question of a recipient of happiness either.

Who Sees?

The infinite backdrop of the NOW sees. It is made of Zeroness or Shunyata. There is no plus and no minus there, simply a straight line of equanimity. Only that Zeroness is the Seer, devoid of an individuality, devoid of a localization, devoid of a center.

What is being Seen?

The desire of Zeroness to know itself is being seen. The only question is ‘Who am I? or more clearly, ‘What am I?’. Its desire to see itself manifests as a plus or a minus. The pluses and minuses are being seen – One arising in any given instance!

Happy Seeing!

Thank you didi for this insight. Would like to ask, the arisings plus/minus that I see/witness in waking, dream states is the same I sense to I – thought projection and the not I being the absolute nothingness. Any movement in nothingness gives rise to I sense in form of arisings? I sense = arisings and further I-thought. Is this understanding correct? As a waker, when I’m witnessing arisings, am I at level of I-sense? How can I witness at level of not I ? Especially in SNGS. Kindly let me know didi. :))

    Thank you
    Please correct me if wrong.
Thought desires arise from vasana then projected as modulation in the mind.
Is this then done through the cidhabasa?
