The image of the witness is not the Witness!
Question:
Dear Ekta Ji, there is a recognition that there is an addiction or craving to doing, when the day’s measure is done and there is nothing more to do (including spiritual doing meditating, journaling) there is an emptiness that becomes unbearable at times. The urge to do arises, cravings are created and unwholesome actions are undertaken. Past impressions of certain beliefs like doing is being productive, stopping wasting time, and time is precious are seen. There is confusion, is the craving more unbearable than the emptiness? Or is it the seeking itself which is distorted and misaligned in direction? It feels 1 step forward and 100 steps backward at the same time. Please advise.
Dear One,
That is exactly what I was pointing out in the self-exploration on seeking in the Guru Tattva Drishti session. The seeking graph is the issue. There is a constant movement of the graph to +80, then back down to -30, up to +20, and down to -70. Consciousness is constantly seeking to strike a balance but is unable to get to ZERO due to the ‘I’ jumping in and interfering or trying to claim the ride. This ride is what you-the-witness are running behind or running away from.
Once you realize from the Self-exploration that it is wiser to be a witness to the ride, now there is a new expectation that just because ‘I am the witness, the graph should stop vacillating; the ride should end. This is a wrong expectation again. You have manufactured a witness image in the mind, and are still trying to interfere with the graph movement.
The image of the witness is not the Witness. The mind is cunning and can manufacture anything. Hence, one must be aware of mind-manufactured spiritual images. It can manufacture images of Samadhi, images of Shunyata or Zeroness, images of the Witness Consciousness, images of Oneness or Pure Consciousness even. Beware the craftiness of the manipulative mind.
When one is standing as the true witness, there is no resistance to the opposing forces of arisings. The arisings come with their magnetic forces of plus or minus and that is not seen as the issue. The issue is of the ‘I’ that wants to identify with the plus or the minus. The ‘I’ indulges in labeling. Labeling begets suffering.
Remember, the arisings don’t come with the labels of ‘good’ or ‘bad’, ‘pleasant’ or ‘painful’, etc. They simply come with their north pole or south pole. That is their intrinsic quality. The judgment of the ‘I’ is what causes the misery. If the ‘I-sense’ recognizes its true nature of witnessing, there is no judgment, no criticism, no praise, no labeling. There is a true rest.
