How does one transact in daily life being the Witness?

Question:

I deeply appreciate your Atma Nirvriti explanations and guidance. At the Knower stage, how does one transact in daily life and work, with family, and even travel and move around? I feel an inwardness, a detachment from the external. It’s a struggle, effort – to act across 2 realms, so to speak. Should I relax, defocus? Could you guide me, please?

Answer:

Why do you make two realms? You say, “Within, I am the Knower; outside, I must deal with the world.” But both the inward quiet and the outward movement are known to you. Examine this division. Is the division anywhere except in thought?

You are making an effort to hold attention inward, and then you call that effort witnessing. Even this effort is witnessed.

    • You know when it begins.
    • You know when it tires you.

What knows it does not begin or end with it, nor does it tire. You have only one possibility, and that is of knowing.

    • When the body moves, you do not move. You only know.
    • When the mind works, you do not work. You only know.
    • When family speaks, the ears listen. You only know.
    • When a decision is needed, it arises. You only know.

Why should knowing make you less available to life?

You need not keep repeating, “I am the Witness.” That is another thought. See it also. The Witness is not maintained by thinking about the Witness. That thought about the Witness is also an experience. Relax the effort to preserve a particular experience.

    • Silence comes and goes.
    • Inwardness comes and goes.

Your inquiry is into that which knows their coming and going. How will you discover it if you insist that one experience must remain?

You do not have to go inward to know that you are. Be simple. Let attention go where it is needed. Let witnessing include even the thought that you have forgotten to witness.

Lastly, when struggle arises, do not struggle with the struggle. Know it. The feeling “I cannot manage both” is present. Stay with the simple fact that it is known. Before you divide experience into spiritual and worldly, recognize that which is the knower.

A wonderful post – “Be simple. Let attention go where it is needed. Let witnessing include even the thought that you have forgotten to witness.” resonates deeply …
