A dialogue on how only the Wake-Dream-Sleep witnessing reveals the fourth!
Question:
Namaste Ektaji, there is a statement from Adhyaasa Drishti, “When the continuity of Turiya in all three states is directly seen, there remains no more fear of death.” Is the deep sleep state recognition referring to the recognition of the absence-thought, or the collapse of the I? I recognize the absence-darkness sometimes [I am, but there is Nothing to know], but still feel ‘I am absent’ in the real deep sleep. So, the Witness cannot have the conviction of immortality? Only Turiyatita can have that conviction? In my experience, not from Swapna Nidra Gnyana Sadhana, but witness naturally has the feeling of fearlessness, since it is the reflection of Pure consciousness.
Answer:
The absence thought is nothing but the absence of Rajas and Satva, hence it is called Tamo Vritti or Passivity. Absence thought or Deep Sleep = the absence of the Waking + the absence of the Dream.
- When the Rajo Vritti, called the Waking state, is witnessed, the ‘I’ is standing as the Sakshi.
- When the partial Rajo Vritti, called the Dream state, is witnessed, the ‘I’ is standing as the Sakshi.
- When the Tamo Vritti, called the Deep Sleep, is witnessed, the ‘I’ is standing as the Sakshi.
Only when the three states [Waking, Dream, and Sleep] are witnessed as the Sakshi, then one stands as the Turiya, or the Fourth. There is no other way to know that you are the fourth without seeing that you are the witness of the first three. Then the realization occurs that the Witness or Sakshi = Turiya. There is no separate Turiya other than the Sakshi. There is no separate Sakshi other than Turiya.
Hence, there is no other way other than Swapna Nidra Gnyana Sadhana to see the highest Truth, my dear. If the term Swapna Nidra Gnyana Sadhana is overwhelming for you, then use Wake-Dream-Sleep Witnessing, but there is no other shortcut, as every other wisdom will only be intellectual, not a direct seeing. This also means that the recognition of Turiyatita [Beyond the Fourth] can happen only after the recognition of Turiya [Fourth]. The recognition of Turiya means the realization of witnessing all three states, Wake-Dream-Sleep. Partial witnessing in one or two states cannot take one to the fourth or beyond. Witnessing the third is a must.
All that the third state is, is the knowing of the absence of the first and the second. Don’t try to make it some kind of magical seeing, dear. It’s what you already know but are ignoring. The absence after a dream is known to you. That is the knowing of the Deep Sleep State.
Questioner:
When a dream ended, I witnessed the blankness/ absence of objects. But after that did not recognize the Witness collapsing into deep sleep. Just blanked out, no memory. Did not recognize the I arising either. Don’t know if this is recognition of Turiya or not…. It did not give any conviction of immortality because the absence-thought recognition was followed by a total blankness.
Answer:
Who blanked out?
Questioner:
No one blanked out. Don’t remember anything, hence calling it blankness. The blankness was not marked on two sides by the collapse of the witness and the arising of the witness.
Answer:
What was that which went into blankness?
Questioner:
The Witness.
Answer:
So, isn’t the blankness, the collapse of the Witness?
Questioner:
Yes, just don’t remember it.
Answer:
Who is telling this to me now? That one remembers.
Questioner:
The Waker is using the memory of the Witness to talk about the absence thought. After that, the Waker is guessing what happened.
Answer:
Nope, there is no permanent and continuous Waker. There is only the Witness wearing the costume of a spiritual seeker and addressing itself as the Waker. It is actually the Witness only. Do you see?
Questioner:
Yes, that is true🙏🏼. Will wait for clearer recognition. Thanks, Ektaji.
